army brat good girl is what most people automatically label anita brooke johnston when they met her, and this label isn't too far from the truth. a high gpa was maintained all through high school and in college a place on the dean's list was always alotted to anita b. johnston. one can tell by her articulated way of speaking that annie has a lot of wisdom and intelligence for her young age of eighteen. she seems as if someone who would play things safe as she can be somewhat shy at first when meeting people, especially when she is attempting to make a good impression. from her wide smile and small jokes, it is obvious to anyone that the young woman has a great optimism and sense of humor. as anita speaks of her goals for the future, it becomes obvious that annie has a great sense of determination that comes from the years of her father's advice and her grandmother's stern guidance.

GO BAD
all these traits go out the window when annie's bad side comes out.

love ensued as soon a twenty-one year old man named david walked into a puerto rican restaurant, hungry from a long day at basic training. his number one priority was food at that very moment, but as the dark haired-dark eyed woman named marisol served the man she knew that the fasted way to a man's heart was through his stomach.. and through some shameless flirting. the two were instantly connected and before they both knew it, david was sneaking off base every day to see his puerto rican love. as david's ship off date came closer and closer, the fear of losing marisol became larger as well. just days before shipping off to germany, a marriage happened between david and marisol at a twenty-four hour chapel in alanta. marisol and david johnston were present as a couple at three am in the morning in a trashy chapel but to the couple the moment was beautiful. three days later david was shipped off and it was an extremely sad parting. two months later, morning sickness started and marisol found herself to be pregnant. she wrote to david telling him of her pregnant and the two were ecstatic despite the fact that david would not be there for the birth. marisol loved every minute of the pregnant and moved in with her mother to have her support during her pregnant. during the last moment of pregnancy, marisol developed preeclampsia which made everyone nervous about the pregnancy. david was not notified of the condition until it was too late. marisol died from complications of childbirth but by some miracle of god, her daughter, anita brooke, lived on. david was given a leave of absence to figure things out and it was worked out between marisol's mother and david that anita would live with her grandmother which david was enlisted.

CHILDHOOD
being raised by an elderly puerto rican woman who spoke barely any english, anita essentially raised herself and had to grow up very quickly. she could balance a check book by the age of thirteen and worked as a translator between her puerto rican family and the professionals they had to deal with, such as the landlord. she began to cook for herself and her grandmother at an age of ten when her grandmother taught her to cook day by day. annie found herself to be treated like an adult by everyone she knew at the age of eleven and was proud of her accomplishments. she was the woman of the house, whether she liked it or not. annie spent much of her time as a child with her nose in a book or in the letters her father sent her. her father reenlisted for tour after tour as he was released from duty. the army was lieutenant johnston's life and through his letters, the army had become all he had known. as annie got older, she hypothesized that her father partially began so obsessed with her job in the army not just because it was his passion but because it was all he had to cope after her mother had died years and years before. annie never truly felt the loss. she was surrounded by family all her life, despite the fact her father was usually miles and miles away in another country. through his letters, it always felt like he was right there.

TEENAGE YEARS
the teen years were the ones were annie excelled the most and began to decline. she got great grades, took up piano and showed her talent through vocal music, and was an all around all american girl. voted homecoming queen and dating a quarter back, everyone wanted to be annie johnston and she was voted most likely to succeed at the end of her senior year. the unknown side to her teacher and adults was the annie that ran the parties on the weekend. the annie that scammed the keg off the beer store cutie and the annie that was trying as hard as she could to lose her virginity. so while she joined national honor society and tutored junior high schoolers on the weekend, she was seducing boys at the chance to get a little attention. all these actions would stay unbeknown to her family until the incident hit the news.

THE INCIDENT
the incident was not just an incident of annie losing her virginity but the incidence of statutory rape in the alanta school system, and it was all anita johnston's fault. though annie was seducing young men at parties on the weekends, she had yet to lose her virginity and she had her eyes set on one person to take her gift of virginity, matthew anthony malinowski, her student teacher. the young man gave long distance glances to annie across the room and smiled in a way that made her know that he was interested. she felt a strong connection to him and began to fail math in a master plan to get tutoring off him, and it worked. one long tuesday of tutoring, things heated up and annie and matthew began to get intimate. the two agreed it was a one time thing and to never let it get out, but there was one problem, security cameras. the school had recently added them in every room due to break ins and student violence. when the cameras were analyzed and the sex between a student teacher and a student was found out about, charges were brought up and it was big news in alanta. wherever annie went there were cameras following as well as at the trial. eventually, despite the fact the act was consensual, alanta's laws of statutory rape stood up. the young man was sent to jail and annie fell into a state of depression. she felt guilt, shame, and embarrassment. the whole world knew her secret.

her family did not punish or deal with the issue in any particular way. anita's grandmother and father decided she had felt enough grief as it was and decided that a fresh start would be the best. her father requested a transfer to south hampton and as a senior, annie started at the high school in south hampton. she started fresh and felt new. her father shipped back out with one word of advice, "take better care of yourself, kiddo." and from then on annie promised she would be much milder in her partying ways. anita finished high school in the top five percent of her class and moved on to south hampton's community college to major in music education.

COLLEGE LIFE
college life agreed with annie as it brought a glow back to her face and gave her a sense of freedom. her father and she decided to send her grandmother back to alanta to live with relatives while she moved into the college dorms. it wasn't long before anita rushed sororities and joined the one of her liking. she was a strong philanthropist and involved with her sororities parties. she was a good girl with a great sense of bad and begin to excel bringing her sorority gpa up by two whole points. life was turning up for annie and she was leaving her past behind.
