PERSONALITY:
There are many different sides to Scarlett and the first is the hacker. The genius. The computer boff. Whatever you want to call her it‘s probably right. Naturally intelligent to levels that are somewhat beyond comprehension Scar is a wiz at mathematics and computers, her brain just that little bit faster than other peoples and her memories for passwords and codes is extraordinary. Hence the reason her password contains about seventy five different letters and numbers that are seemingly meaningless even to her. Now this heightened intelligence has served her well over the years, but it has also come at a cost. Very intelligent in one way and very dumb in another is Miss Fielding. Give her a chain of random numbers she can find you the link inside of them within moments, send her on a date and she‘ll blunder her way through three awkward conversations before darting out the door in hopes that she can avoid anymore human interaction. Scar works on her own because she can‘t take emotional attachments to people, at least not until she knows them very well. Often tending towards hiding behind her intelligence she uses jargon to deflect people from getting too close to her, and it works. Mostly.
THE SISTER THE SISTER THE SISTER THE SISTER THE SISTER THE
Before Scarlett struck out on her own she was part of what was a very big ‘family’ and it was here that she betrayed another side of her character. Very motherly, almost caring to those whom surround her she tends to protect before she coddles. Having never been coddled herself she doesn’t quite know how to go about it that way, but she showed her affection in what ways she could. Cooking, cleaning, making sure they had what they needed to succeed in whatever they were doing - that was how she cared for them. Even though she couldn’t quite find the right words to express it. Emotionally Scar is extremely stilted. She knows happy, she knows sad, she knows loyal… But she does tend to see the world in black and white, and she longs for nothing else than to belong somewhere. When she found her brothers this need was sated for a while, which is why she went along with whatever they wanted for their lives for a long time. Blindly following. She wanted to be their sister because she does crave affection, even if she’s not comfortable expressing it to more than a few people. She’s got a good heart, but the chances of it ever being worn on her sleeve or readable in her expression is pretty much nil. She’s a real emotional throwback as it were.
THE FIREBALL THE FIREBALL THE FIREBALL THE FIREBALL THE
Scarlett has a temper. A big temper. She tries to keep it under wraps but there are just certain parts of her personality that it bleeds through without her truly intending it to. Her determination for one. Once Scar gets an idea in her head she’s like a dog with a bone, she’s as stubborn as a mule. Sink her teeth in and won’t let go. This has served her well over the years, but it has also served her ill, because sometimes she sets her mind to something that is wrong and it leads her into more crap than she was already in. Determination is a very double sided sword. Another way that her temper shows is in the way she doesn’t allow people to get close at her. She’ll snap at anyone that gets too close for comfort. She’s just not comfortable with people being around her, oh sure she can act the social butterfly, pretend to be okay with everyone so that they trust her, but at all times she’ll have every detail of the room scoped, every face named and accounted for. Once a criminal always a criminal as it were, even when that criminality becomes legal technically. Defensiveness is trained into you when you are forever looking out for cops or officials coming to try and catch you out. She didn’t fancy jail after all.
THE EARS THE EARS THE EARS THE EARS THE EARS THE EARS
One of Scarlett’s shall we say… Nicer sides comes under this section of her personality. Impatient with work but patient with people she can be a very good listener who will just sit and allow people to talk to her about anything. Working with men it wasn’t usually called for, they were action rather than speech, but on the odd occasion where someone was upset she was the one they ran to. She can sit for hours and just listen to whatever people want to tell her, and they know that her lips are as sealed as a bank vault, only ever opened when need be. She’s a very trustworthy person, despite her criminality, but she only extends this trustworthiness to people she feels deserve it. If you gossip you will be gossiped about is her motto for life. It could be claimed that as her ex is the head of the operation she is it’s heart. Sort of. There is really no way of defining Scar, she’s just got far too many layers to her. There’s always something else lurking behind her mysterious “you can’t read me” smile.

HISTORY:
Twenty three hours of labour and then a back alley for Emma Fielding lead to her daughter Aurora was born screaming and wailing into the world. Cold from the moment she took her first breath. No nice warm hospital. No blankets. No nurses. Just the strip of wet pavement outside the local Chinese and her exhausted mother panting and wheezing. The baby hadn’t been planned, and the father wasn’t around so it seemed that this was all Rory and Emma would ever have. Emma was actually at work with Rory came, hence the reason for the back alley. She stumbled back in, holding the baby. It was her boss that helped in the end. This male boss wrapped the baby in a towel from the bathroom and handed her back to her mother, whom by then had been sat down. Little Rory. Small, tiny, crying her head off. This was the start of her story, and really a foreshadowing of everything was to come.
3rd of OCTOBER 1990
Rory speaks her first word. Perched precariously on the edge of a kitchen counter in the squalid flat that her mother managed to afford she uttered the word “apple” and shocked everyone. After all they’d been told that speech would take a hell of a lot longer to come. Emma was thrilled, saw from there that her daughter was intelligent, but at the same time she was worried. Because she might have spoken early, but she didn’t seem to connect like other babies did. When she cried she wasn’t comforted by her presence, if anything it made her cry harder. Emma had learnt to just let her cry it out and then go to her rather than try to hold her or comfort her.
3rd OF SEPTEMBER 1995
This was the day that everything changed for Rory. Not for the worse, but for the better. Because this was the day when she met Mack. Emma had gotten herself a boyfriend, but he wasn’t the nicest of souls. Often laying a hand to both her, and Rory. Hence the reason Emma had told Rory that day that she could go out and play in the park, get away from it for a while, as long as she didn’t trust anyone that came up to her, and the little girl agreed. Promised not to trust anyone, but when Mack approached her that bit of advice and that promise went clean out of her head. Mack Williams. Five years her senior he was ten at the time. He offered his hand to her and she took it. Didn’t even bother to question, her too old head assessing him, her instincts screaming he wasn’t going to hurt her. He was gorgeous even then, dark eyes staring into her child ones, a smile on his face. He led her away from the flat, he led her away from her Mother’s vision, he lead her away from the violence, and he brought her to meet Kane. Kane and Mack, brothers in all but blood. This was the day that Aurora Taylor officially went missing. Because she never returned home to that flat in Chicago. No. She stayed with the young boy whom had taken her hand in that playground. The authorities did the usual search, but didn’t really bother. Just another runaway, no one cared where she was apart from her Mom, and she had no way of locating her little girl. But why you ask did Mack offer that hand? Why take a little girl from everything she knew? Because he wanted to protect her that’s why. Always the same reason, he’s always wanted to protect her. Standing out in the streets all night he heard the violence in that flat and when the opportunity had presented itself he took it. He took Rory. Anyone hitting a child, or allowing a child to be hit, didn’t deserve one in his mind, and he knew he could do a better job of taking care of her. He just knew he could. And he did. They became a family.
10th OF JANUARY 1996
Rory got her first computer. At the time it had just been another bit of technology that Mack had nicked from a burglary, little did any of them suspect that it would be the key to their rather… liquid future. By that point their ‘family’ was bankrolled by Mack’s and Kane’s robbing the houses of rich bastards in the town, but as Rory flicked her fingers over the keyboard as if she’d been born with one at her fingertips it was the sound of tapping success, pretty soon they wouldn’t need burglary to get their way through. This was also the day that Cathy joined the family. Mack found her wandering the streets all alone and brought her back to the warehouse that the present three called home. She settled down just fine. Two years younger than Mack but three years Rory’s senior she was another sister for the collection, the family that Mack was building of kids that had no where else they could truly go. The head of the family, Rory was pretty sure she was already in love with him. Everything he did was amazingly exciting and exhilarating. Her fairytale brain saw him as her own personal prince charming, and she was a bit jealous of Cathy at first if she was honest.
12th Of MAY 1998
This was the day of Rory’s first hack, into the bank account of a high class business man who wouldn’t miss the odd million. A straight transfer through an off-shore bank then back into Mack‘s. He sat beside her and watched, and the look he gave her was enough to send her little girl heart speeding. His little Rawrs. That was what he used to call her back then. All mad wavy hair and bright hazel eyes set in a piquant face creased in concentration half the time. At the time Rory was blind to the way he stood between her and the world, stood over her like a shadow at all times. More than Kane, and more than any of the other boys whom had joined them since. Mark, Taylor, Jonah, Eddie, Mickey, Kane, Cathy, Mack and Rory. Wanted criminals and none of them over 16. They fought for what they got and they got what they deserved. Mark was the muscles. Taylor the sneak. Jonah could shoot straight at 100 meters. Eddie was the pretty boy, could get them in anywhere. Mickey was the second set of brains. Kane was the eyes. Cathy was the honey trap. Mack was the leader and Rory was the heart, the hacker, the computer boff… Whatever they were all called they were a family stronger than even the closest blood relations. The only people Rory would ever care for completely, the only ones she could connect with emotionally in the world. She’d never trust anyone else the same way she did them.
14th OF NOVEMBER 2003
This was the day that the ‘team’ took it’s first hit. The first wanted advertisement went out for them. Suddenly what had been almost fun and games was serious. They were being watched, people wanted them. Their faces weren’t known, but their roles were, suddenly reality began to set into their world. Mack tried his best to make them all disappear under the radar again, but he was by then eighteen and if he got caught it would mean a very long jail sentence. It seemed that day was especially bad luck, because it was also the same day the family took it’s first life from someone. A cop came sniffing around their new warehouse, found Rory outside, and tried to take her in, thinking she was just a runaway and should be taken back to her family, he was technically an innocent. It was Jonah that fired the shot, but it didn‘t really matter which of them had done it, first blood was spilled. One minute the cop was holding Rory by the arm, dragging her off, the next he was lying on the ground, a hole in his head. Aurora couldn‘t take it, and had it not been for Mack running to grab her before she could she would have incriminated herself further by covering the corpse with her DNA. She cried into his shoulder all night. Fun and games wasn‘t so fun anymore. The team closed ranks, but Mack knew something had to be done, they couldn‘t carry on like they were.
21st OF SEPTEMBER 2005
Nothing was done for two years after that, the team continued to operate as they had always done. Rory would hack a bank account of some corporation, relieve them of some funds and then they would move on to the next mark. Grifters, con men, crooks, criminals… The names for this team of misfits banded from one mouth to the next. The police force wanted them, Interpol wanted them, the FBI and CIA wanted them, but every time they tugged in the net the gang would go out the back door somehow. Mack’s quick thinking, Rory’s Trojans… Jonah’s sharp shooting. The authorities thought they were dealing with adults so they were looking for adults. Not minors. Their traps were set for adults. The 21st of September is important for one reason to Rory, it was the day her and Mack had their first kiss. The rest of the team were out on a job, ripping off a loan shark who liked to beat up his clients, and Mack just kissed her. To say that she hadn’t been expecting it was an understatement, it had come as a massive surprise, a welcome one, as she’d been in love with him for ten years by that point, but yeah still a shock. This was also the day she lost her virginity. What’s the use of the age of consent when you’re a wanted criminal anyway? As she lay in his arms she swore that no matter what she’d protect her family, she’d protect him, with everything in her.
23rd OF AUGUST 2007
This was the day the deal was made, and the day that Mack asked Rory to marry him. But first the deal. Having been evading the police for eight or so years it’s pretty simple to say that they were close to getting caught out somewhere, and Mack knew it. So he went to a police station, flashed a smile and asked to be arrested. The rest of the gang were horrified when they heard. They couldn’t figure out what he was playing at, and it wasn’t long before they were all hauled in too. Placed in separate cells they all just had to blindly trust that Mack knew what he was doing, despite not having told any of them the plan. They were all questioned separately, before the truth finally revealed itself. Mack had made a deal. The boys would join the military on a black ops team, Rory would work as an analyst and Cathy would assist in whatever way they could. Mack sold them all to save them from jail, and thus their futures were set out. Once they were all out the police station Mack took Rory by the hand, as he had done on that first day and they drove off, leaving the rest of the team to pack up the warehouse. He drove them to a field, took her for a walk, and on the way back asked her to marry him, knowing that pretty soon they would be separated, his new work taking him away. She said yes without a moment of hesitation, but back then she hadn’t known what was going to happen in the next year.
24TH OF APRIL 2008
This was the day that everything changed once again. The military suited the boys so well, finally they could use what had made them amazing criminals for the good of the country rather than just the good of themselves, and they loved it. They were the team that was sent out to deal with people that needed to ‘eliminated’ quietly. They went in, they did the job and they came out again. It was only Rory that wasn’t happy, even Cathy was fine with her job, just Rory. Thinking of the men she loved killing for a living just tearing her to pieces, what happened when they themselves became the target? Would they become the target? Could they truly trust the people that had been hunting them for so long? The questions buzzed around her head like horribly persistent insects, but every time she rose the subject with Mack he banded the subject away, said she was being paranoid. That everything was fine and they were fine and everything was secure now. So what of this day? What made it so different? Well this was the day, or more night, that Rory just couldn’t hack it anymore. Her and Mack had gotten stuck in a pattern, he never told her he loved her, he slept with her and then rolled away, and she felt cheap. Someone to keep his bed warm, and when she confronted him on this fateful night in April he didn’t say the right thing in reply. He just told her to stop being so silly and to go back to sleep. He did love her, but he’d never been very good at words, he couldn’t say the pretty things to her, but it was enough to make her think he truly didn’t want the same things she did. She wanted a real family and a real love… Not just sex. So when he woke up the next door he found the bed empty and a note on the pillow. Please don’t follow me, this is for the best. Rory xx. She was gone. She’d made a deal in the night with her employer, she would continue her work, but she wanted a new life, and they were willing to give it to her. They needed her research enough to let her get away with being contrary. She’d been studying for her PHD by this point anyway, but what she wanted was to teach. Leaving Mack killed her inside, but she managed to survive because she thought it was for the best.
1ST OF JANUARY 2010
Rory‘s, by this point Scarlett’s, 20th birthday was another key date in her life, because it was the day she was hired as teacher at a school in South Hampton. Her credentials enough for her to be qualified despite her young age. After all she had the bits of paper to say she was qualified. She still works on and off for the authorities if something comes in that needs an expert, but she’s served her time and now they pretty much just let her get on her life. She knows her boys are still running ops with the military, but she does her best not to ask after them, she doesn’t want to know, doesn’t want to worry anymore. It’s only in the nights that things truly come to her, when she can’t get their faces out of her head. She lives alone because she has nightmares, and she doesn’t even have any friends. Her brain might be far faster than most peoples, but her emotions are incredibly stilted. It was her family that made her feel she belonged, but now she’s alone she can see she was fooling herself. She doesn’t belong anywhere. Not truly. Everything that she was belonged to Mack, and it had been almost 2 years since she’d seen him last. She’s living a shell of a life, but it’s better than being stuck in a circle.
